Pride Protest 2017

This June in West Hollywood, there will be no LGBT Pride Parade. Instead there will be a march entitled — #Resist March. This will coincide with the National Equality March in Washington, DC. It will also be the one year anniversary of the massacre at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando.resist-la-pride-750x563

I am happy to hear that LA Pride organizers (Christopher Street West) are doing this event at this time. I love Pride… I have been going to the festivals and the parades for over 30 years now. The last year at the Pride Festival was not so cool for us. It was expensive, and there was not much happening other than food, drinks and entertainment. In past years, there was plenty of community organizations and small business vendors. At today’s pride, those things are gone and replaced with more ways to get drunk and party.

The parade too has changed. There used to be more smaller groups too, and not so many corporations. But I always enjoy the men in Speedos and the leather guys in ass-less chaps. But it’s OK to be missing this — this time. There are more important things going on in the world.

Here are the reasons that I am marching this year:

  1. To send a message to Donald Trump. Still hard to believe that this evil, small-minded man is the President. LGBT people don’t seem to fit in his vision of “Making America Great Again.”
  2. To remember those friends that we have lost to AIDS and those elders that came before us in the fight for gay rights.
  3. To protect marriage equality. My partner and I finally got married on August 27, 2016. It was one of the happiest days of our lives. I want to make sure that the government cannot take that away.
  4. To protect and encourage healthcare for all. Everyone regardless of income, race, or religion should have access to quality and affordable healthcare. Republicans don’t seem to think this way… their idea is to just not get sick!
  5. To protect freedom of religion and the separation of church and state. We all have the right to worship as we want (Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, etc.). But I don’t want religion in my politics!
  6. For our youth. I want to live in a world where people can love and marry who they want, dress how they want, and worship (or not) how they want to. I want a world of diversity.
  7. For the women in the world. It is about time that women make the same as a man for doing the same job. I believe in equal pay for women and in funding for reproductive health.
  8. For the planet. I believe in science and global warming. It is very scary that our leaders do not, and want to get rid of anything good that Obama did regarding cutting emissions.
  9. For the world. To let people in other countries know that we will not sit idly by why a fool ruins our country and world. We are fed up and we are going to keep our resistance up.
  10. Because Black Lives Matter. This doesn’t get said enough. I worry that my African-American husband will go out to the store, and not return. Just because he encountered a trigger-happy racist on his trip.

For all these reasons and more, I will be marching on Sunday, June 11, 2017. And yes, the KiltMan will be rocking the kilt while he protests. I encourage you to get involved, stand up and let your voices be heard. We will NOT be silent and we are not going away.

Love is Love

With the recent Supreme Court rulings on DOMA and Proposition 8, we again have gay marriage in California. I still get teary eyed when I see all the happy couples getting married. This looks and feels so right to me. I am looking forward to marrying my long-term partner in the next year.1005282_471905292902196_356035129_n Kilted gay couple

What I still don’t get is the opposition. They are trying their damnest to stop the marriages from continuing. Exactly how are you being harmed again? I would love to hear the details. C’mon now, be specific. I want to hear how you were traumatized by seeing 2 guys kissing on TV, and now you have to go to weekly therapy sessions to get over the traumatic event. How it made you so depressed, you didn’t feel like going to work in the morning, or even getting out of bed. How you are avoiding the gym because there might be some gays looking at you.

When I see the gay and lesbian couples getting married, I see families being recognized and strengthened. I see joy, commitment, honesty, sharing, beauty, heart, compassion and above all, I see love. Lots and lots of love. You see — straight people don’t have a monopoly on love, yet the conservatives seem to think they do. Who are you to deny me my happiness, when my relationship is just as valid as yours?

If these people were true Christians, they would be praying for us, not trying to stand in our way and deny us our right to get married. I can get them being upset, but the dam has busted and gay marriage is inevitable in the entire USA. It will happen in a number of years. Public opinion, the courts and increasingly the voting public are on the side of gay marriage.

There are plenty of things that get me upset in this world, but I choose to not dwell on them — but I pray about them too. There are so many more important issues in this world: hunger, poverty, healthcare, living wage, education, abuse, murder, gangs, sexism, racism, guns, global warming — I can go on and on. Aren’t these all more important than trying to stop gays from marrying? To those hate filled conservatives still whining about gay marriage, I say “Get Your Priorities Straight!”

Love is never wrong. The love between a mother and child, the love between a husband and wife, the love between siblings, between friends — the love between 2 committed lesbians or 2 gay men. Love is love.

Happy 2nd Anniversary, Kilt Man!

Wow! I can’t believe it has been 2 years since I started this blog. Time sure does fly when you are having fun. Writing this blog has been a learning and growing experience for me. I had no idea at the time that it would come this far! I have realized that I am stronger than I ever gave myself credit for. That I have a voice and it matters. When I was younger, I doubted myself so much. And thought I was boring. I am happy that I have grown into the confident, independent, free-thinking and free-spirited person I am today. And I am glad I can share my love of writing with you.Happy Anniversary

Here are some of the highlights of my 2nd year:

• Music
From concert reviews (Madonna, J Lo, Lady Gaga and more) to lists of hunks in country and pop music, to favorite Christmas albums — music is and always will be one of my favorite topics to talk about.

• Gay Rights
It is amazing how fast gay rights are advancing in this country. It is about time, America! I touched on bullying, the election, supportive celebrities, the Boy Scouts, coming out and more as far as gay-related topics. I am sure with the decision on accepting gay Scouts, plus the upcoming Supreme Court decisions — there will be continue to be plenty of discussions about gay rights and marriage equality.

• Movies/TV
I have talked about how to fix American Idol, to my Oscar picks, to reviews of new shows and movies. I strive to be the pop culture expert on the web for my readers. I love and appreciate all that it takes to make a hit movie, an engaging drama or a fun diversion.

• Serious Stuff
Life is not all fun and games. I have touched on spirituality, self acceptance, your worth in society, friends v. fuck buddies, breaking stereotypes and more. Like anyone I have my down times, and wonder what life’s really about.

I look forward to more entertaining and thought provoking topics in Year 3. Coming soon — the eBook from Year 1. Details will be posted soon. Thanks to all my faithful followers for another great year. Please remember to comment on the posts — I love to hear from my readers.
