Remember This: Groups — Part 1

I am a pop music junkie. The music business is a tough business. You may have a few good years, and then it is over. Below is my list of groups that had their time on the charts, and the songs that made them famous.

The Jets
This family act from Minneapolis via Tonga had some fun songs in the 80’s. They played their instruments as well as sang and danced. Essential songs: Crush on You, Cross My Broken Heart http://youtu.be/Oy10rRJ0Cuk

Klymaxx
This group would best be described as ladies with attitude. They were all strong, powerful, females. Essential songs: Meeting in the Ladies Room, I Miss You http://youtu.be/_odTlZaoLCA

Midnight Star
Another group that was predominantly a hit on the R&B charts. Their sound combined funk, soul and dance. Essential songs: Freak-A-Zoid, No Parking on the Dance Floor http://youtu.be/uRo426va26I

Fine Young Cannibals
Part of the New Wave British invasion of the 80’s and 90’s. They were led by the soulful vocals of Roland Gift. I remember going to their concert, and it was just OK. But the songs still sound good. Essentials songs: She Drives Me Crazy, Good Thing http://youtu.be/9wSn81dLK6s

Thompson Twins
They were a trio during the high-point of their fame, plus even got to be a part of the Live Aid concert. Lead singer Tom Bailey is touring the US this summer as part an 80’s flashback tour. Essential songs: Hold Me Now, Lies http://youtu.be/H9694K85Xc8

Atlantic Starr
The 2nd “Star” group on my list. They had some nice slow jams as well as dance songs too. A nice mix of male and female vocals too. Essential songs: Secret Lovers, Circles http://youtu.be/Oe2UXqFo0DY

Sweet Sensation
One of several dance-pop trios to emerge from the Freestyle music scene. They did mostly dance songs, but hit #1 with “If Wishes Came True”. Essential songs: Hooked on You, Take It While It’s Hot, Love Child http://youtu.be/RNEc7bJ8-9k

Exposé
Gioia, Jeanette and Ann are the ladies of Exposé. These ladies had a string of Top 40 hits in the 80-90’s. They broke up for awhile, but are still on the touring scene today. Essential songs: What You Don’t Know, Come Go with Me http://youtu.be/zonMdfRff-I

I hope you enjoyed my trip down memory lane. Look for Part 2 of this topic next week. I would love to hear your thoughts.

‘Real World’ Issues

The latest season of MTV’s The Real World just ended. This is the ground-breaking reality show that takes seven strangers, puts them in a house, and let’s us watch as things get ‘real.’ The latest installment was filmed in Portland, Oregon. There were a few issues raised this season that I wanted to comment on.Real World Portland

• Open Marriage
The roommates like to party and are often seen out at local bars/clubs. On the first episode of the season, Jordan met a cute girl at a club. She then proceeded to introduce him to her husband of 1 week. Fine enough, but did I mention that the girl was looking to hook-up and that the husband was fine with it? Woah — Way to honor your marriage commitment. These are probably the same people who would deny me the right to marry my partner.

• Gay Sex
Sex is another favorite topic in the household. Somehow the topic of anal sex came up. Marlon, a good-looking masculine black guy, admitted to having anal sex with a man. What was his role, top or bottom — it wasn’t said. He identifies as straight and I applaud him for his honesty. The other guys seemed cool with his answer. Women have always been more open about bisexual experiences, but with men it is still taboo to mention in many circles. I hope we are coming to a place where an admission like this is no big deal.

• Purity Ring
One girl in the house, Jessica, started to date a cute, tall guy named Tyler. They seemed to be getting closer, but then Jessica sacred him off by putting up a bunch of photos of the two of them around her room. After the sad breakup via email, Jessica decided to buy a purity ring for herself, and made a big announcement to her roomies. While I applaud her for realizing she doesn’t need a man to make her happy, I don’t get the whole announcing it to the roommates. Her celibacy is between her and God — we don’t need to know. To me, there is something to be said for not hopping into bed with the next person you meet. Waiting can be a good thing.

• Self Esteem
One roommate, Jordan, was born with a birth defect on one arm. He doesn’t have a full hand, but just some nubs there. He has been very hard to get along with sometimes, and one roommate insists it is because he supposedly has a small penis. But Jordan had a good confessional moment, and admitted that he didn’t like himself very much, and he didn’t know how to change. I think we have all been there with this one! I know I had low self-esteem in my late teens and early 20’s. I hope he comes to love himself.

So what issues will come up on the next season of the show? We will have to stay tuned to find out.

The Appeal of the “Shore”

Now playing on MTV is the latest season of “Jersey Shore.” The show that came out in 2009 as a rip off of “The Real World” set in Jersey, is now celebrating it’s 4th season set in Italy. Why does this show still fascinate us? I will try to offer some suggestions.

  1. It’s a train wreck. You know how you can’t take your eyes off of a car crash on the side of the road, the one with blood and guts on the pavement, it’s a lot like that. Anyone who has waited in traffic for hours, wants to see something when they pass a traffic accident. We don’t want to see a stalled car, after waiting so long.
  2. We actually like these people. They have been in our lives for a few years now and we have seen their good times and bad. They fight and make up, just like family and friends do. They have become part of our TV family. These are people who we wouldn’t mind hanging out with over Sunday dinner or a night fist-pumping at the club. (more…)
