Concerts I am Looking Forward to in 2018

As a live music fan, one of my favorite things is looking to see who is coming in concert in the new year. Will an old favorite be coming to town, or is it my chance to see someone new? I was excited that I got to see 3 artists I had never seen before in 2017. Here is my list of the artists I am looking forward to in concert this year:

Pink
I saw her early in her career on the Mizunderstood tour, plus when she opened for Justin Timberlake too. She will be touring behind her recent #1 album “Beautiful Trauma.” Plus she is known for doing acrobats in her shows now too. It should be awesome!

Ed Sheeran
I tried to get tickets to see him in 2017 — but he sold out very fast. For 2018, he is going on a stadium tour that will take him to Pasadena at the Rose Bowl. I may finally get to his show! He is one of the most exciting singers of the last 10 years, and he can command a stage with just his voice and his guitar.

Bananarama
The girl group from England is back! I got to see them back in 1989, and it was not the original 3 girls, just 2 of the originals plus another girl. But now the original lineup (Sara, Keren, Siobhan) has reunited and toured the UK, but they are coming to the US for a few shows too. Bring back the 80’s!

Naill Horan
Yet another successful solo artist from One Direction. With “Slow Hands,” Naill has shown the world what he can do on his own. He is a singer-songwriter with heart. Plus he is bringing along country upstart — Maren Morris — on his “Flicker” World Tour.

Miranda Lambert
She is one of the reigning queens of country in a genre dominated by men. She is going out on her “Livin’ Like Hippies” tour for 2018 with special guests Jon Pardi and Lucie Silvas. She is sure to include songs from her 2017 album “The Weight of These Wings” — her most personal album yet. A second leg of the tour will add Little Big Town as her co-headliner.

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill
They have finally have released their duet album — “The Rest of Our Lives.” This is the latest iteration of their Soul 2 Soul Tour which I saw back in 2006. Tim has continued to be a big draw on his own, while Faith has been home raising the kids. It is time that she is back in the limelight.

Sam Smith
The male Adele, as he has been called, is back with his second album “The Thrill of It All.” It includes the hit single “Too Good at Goodbyes.” What I have found interesting about the album is the intersection of faith and sexuality that he writes about in some of the new songs. I am sure he will be moving people with his voice on tour.

Maroon 5
One of my favorite groups of the last decade, Maroon 5, is heading out on the Red Pill Blues Tour. Special guest is Julia Michaels, a Grammy nominee for Best New Artist. They definitely have a deep song catalog at this point, and Adam is always nice to look at too.

Demi Lovato/DJ Khalid
Former Disney girl Demi finally has an album worthy of her voice on “Tell Me You Love Me,” her recent album. It includes her biggest hit “Sorry Not Sorry.” Joining her is superstar producer/DJ — DJ Khalid. He notched a few hits on the charts the past year with “Wild Thoughts” and “I’m the One.” You wonder who will show up on tour during his set (Rihanna, Justin Beiber?). It should be a cool show.

Taylor Swift
Taylor is heading out on the Reputation World Tour this year, and she is playing stadiums. She’s got quite the song catalog at this point. Even if I am not too crazy about the new material, I am sure I would enjoy myself.

Lara Fabian
Who remembers “I Will Love Again” from the year 2000? I guess somebody does, as the singer is going on tour in the US to promote her new album “Camouflage.” Definitely a curiosity.

Sugarland
The award-winning country duo of Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush is finally getting back together. A single came out at the end of last year, and a summer tour is on the way. Let’s hope they make this a permanent thing.

Justin Timberlake
He’s headlining the Super Bowl halftime show this year and releasing his new album “Man of the Woods” the same weekend. The first single “Filthy” is just OK to me. It will be interesting to see what the rest of the album brings.

Rod Stewart/Cyndi Lauper
Two icons are joining forces for a summer tour that includes a stop at the Hollywood Bowl. Here’s hoping that they do a few songs together. I also hope that Cyndi sings some songs from “Kinky Boots.”

Lady Antebellum/Darius Rucker
Two titans of country music are also banding together for a summer tour. Pop-country trio Lady Antebellum and former Hootie singer Darius Rucker. They have toured together before, but Darius was an opening act for them. Now they are both superstars in the genre.

That’s it for my wish list! I hope I can see a few of these shows. Please sound off in the comments about which ones you are looking forward to.

Concerts I Am Looking Forward to in 2015

As a huge live music fan, going to concerts is one of my favorite things in the whole world. I love the entire experience: you get to see your favorite artists and sing along to their songs. I love the energy of the crowd; the production values — lights, costumes, choreography; the big spectacle of it all. Like Madonna says “Music — makes the people come together”. So what shows am I looking forward to in 2015, read on:

Maroon 5
One of my favorite groups of the last 10 years, surprisingly I have never seen them live before. It’s not that I haven’t tried to get tickets, as I have, but they are always sold out. Yes, their albums have gotten more pop, and commercial since their first album, but I still like them. The group heads out of the “V” tour with special guest, Magic! this coming spring.

Taylor Swift
She is winning me over. When she first came out, I was shocked at how bad her vocals were. But she’s grown up, and gotten better control of her instrument and her range. She will never be Faith Hill, but that’s OK. Plus the whole pop thing fits well with her, she was always more pop than country anyways. Her tour will be in support of her “1989” album. She has quite the song catalog now too.

Little Big Town
This 4-person country vocal group has been one of my favorites since their song “Bring It on Home.” I have described their sound as the country version of Fleetwood Mac, as they trade off between male and female vocals on their songs. I am not so thrilled that their biggest hit “Pontoon” was pretty lame. But they have albums of great songs, so I can overlook that one. Opening acts include: Brett Eldredge and Brothers Osborne.

Bette Midler
The Divine Miss M is headed back on the road to promote her covers CD “It’s the Girls” — a tribute to female groups. She is looking to go “green” on this tour. I have seen some of her shows on video before. It should be a good show as she is a consummate performer.

Kenny Chesney/Jason Aldean
Two of country’s big guns head out for a series of co-headlining shows in stadium across the country. Jason is supporting his CD “Old Boots, New Dirt,” while Kenny is supporting his recent CD ‘The Big Revival.” Country hunk newcomer Brantley Gilbert will be opening for them on select dates.

Lady GaGa/Tony Bennett
2014’s most unlikely collaboration will result in some live shows in 2015. Their CD of standards “Cheek to Cheek” proved to be a success on many levels including a Grammy nomination. It will be interesting to see how much of their own song catalogs they fit into the shows. The tour even includes a stop at the legendary Hollywood Bowl.

Ariana Grande
She was definitely one of the biggest breakthrough acts of 2014 with her string of irresistible sing-along hits (Problem, Break Free, Bang Bang). Now she is heading out on the Honeymoon Tour with boy band Rixton and Cashmere Cat as opening acts. From what I have seen of her on TV, she will definitely be hitting the right notes on stage.

Idina Menzel
Broadway star Indina Menzel helped the “Frozen” soundtrack dominate the charts in 2014. She will be singing songs from Rent, Wicked, IF/Then and more I am sure. Maybe even some songs from “Glee” too. But for me, hearing her sing “Let It Go” live would be worth the price of admission alone.

Lady Antebellum
Country’s top trio head out on their Wheels Up Tour in support of their recent album “747”. Supporting acts include: Hunter Hayes and Sam Hunt. Their irresistible vocal harmonies and catchy songs will make for a great concert.

So that’s my list. I hope you have a chance to catch these artists on the road in 2015. Look for me in the cheap seats. And of course, every show I go to I will blog about it too. Let me know who you want to see in 2015.

Concerts I Am Looking Forward To In 2013

Here’s my list of the shows I am looking forward to this year:

Lady GaGa
Lady GaGa has been on tour with the “Born This Way” Ball for awhile now (She was on my list last year). It is finally hitting the US in the first half of the year.Lady GaGa

Rihanna
Well, the tour in 2012 never developed. And she was in the flop movie “Battleship”. She is touring behind her new CD “Unapologetic”, and is sure to include hits from the “Talk That Talk” album too. The new tour called “Diamonds” tour is set to hit the states in March.

Taylor Swift
Her latest CD “Red” is flying off the shelves… and so are the tickets to her latest tour which includes stadium shows in select cities. With her move fully into pop music with this latest CD, I am sure it will be a very theatrical and entertaining evening.

Maroon 5
I tried to get tickets for the 2013 tour, but they sold out very fast. They have been hotter since Adam Levine has been on “The Voice”. Plus supporting acts Owl City and Neon Trees should add to a great evening of live music.

Great First Albums

Music is part of my life. It brings me up when I am down, makes me want to dance, and moves my soul. Sometimes artists come on strong, never to make an album as strong again. For others it is just a glimpse of all the greatness to come. Here is my list of the Top Ten Greatest First Albums (in no particular order):

  • The B-52’s — “The B-52’s”
The band from Athens, GA came on strong with their first album. The music scene didn’t know what to make of them. Were they punk? A comedy group? Were they retro? All I know is this is one fun party album. Classic tracks included: “Rock Lobster,” “Lava” and “Planet Claire.” They would hit the big time finally with “Love Shack.”The B-52's
  • Cyndi Lauper — “She’s So Unusual”
Benefitting from the early days of MTV, she was a breath of fresh air from the pretty dance queens. This was a girl who definitely marched to the beat of her own drum. Classic tracks included: “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” “Time After Time” and “Money Changes Everything.” She is still a popular artist on the touring circuit, and released a blues album in 2011.
  • Duran Duran — “Duran Duran”
“Rio” was the band’s breakthrough for sure, but the success of that one brought their first album back in the spotlight when they added “Is There Something I Should Know?” to it and re-released it. Classic tracks included: “Girls on Film,” “Planet Earth” and “Careless Memories.” Another MTV ready band, they also tour regularly and are still going strong.
  • Alicia Keys — “Songs in A Minor”
The pretty girl who played piano, hit the big time with her debut. In the process, she has inspired plenty of up and coming singers. Classic tracks included: “Fallin,” “How Come You Don’t Call Me” and “A Woman’s Worth.” She has had many more hits in recent years, slowing down to get married and start a family.
  • Culture Club — “Kissing to Be Clever”
Another great band from MTV’s early days, when they played videos. Boy George may have looked different with his makeup and outfits, but his voice was pure soul. Classic tracks included: “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?,” “Time” and “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya.” (more…)

Speedos, Masculinity and Music

Real men still wear Speedos. Little did I know that this would become my most famous and successful posting to date. This latest entry will examine men in the music/entertainment business. We’ll talk about famous guys in Speedos as well as some views on masculinity too.

After cruising around the web the other day, I stumbled upon a new music video by the group LMFAO called “Sexy and You Know It.” The description said that members of the group were shakin’ it in Speedos at Venice Beach. I watched it, and thought it was a very fun video. It is about time that we get to see men shake it in music videos. LMFAO is a relatively new group made up of 2 guys — Redfoo and SkyBlu, both related to industry maven Berry Gordy (son and grandson). They had a big hit this past summer with “Party Rock Anthem.” Redfoo is the lead singer on the latest video, while SkyBlu is seen sporting a cardboard box TV head. I give the guys props for donning Speedos. They seem secure in their sexuality (I assume they are straight) and are having some fun. They don’t seem to care what other people think. Dancing at the club in Speedos would be awesome I am sure. And there are liberal shots of them shaking their “junk.” Be sure to watch the video here.
