Staying Creative

I am a creative person — plain and simple. I have been an artistic person ever since I could remember. As a kid, I made a mini amusement park out of cardboard including a working ride too. I enjoyed doing crafts, coloring and making things with my hands. I currently work as a graphic designer. It is not always easy to stay on top of things and to come up with new ideas. Here are some things I do to stay inspired.

  1. See a movie. I enjoy this art form: from the fluffy and forgettable summer blockbusters to the more serious-minded award season fare. I am inspired by great writing, direction and acting; by how a movie looks and feels.
  2. Go on a hike. Nothing like getting out of the office and getting some fresh air. I am lucky enough to live in beautiful Southern California where I can hike year round. And there are lots of different and scenic trails to choose from.
  3. Listen to some music. I can’t imagine living without music. I love all types: pop, rock, dance, R&B, country, jazz, soundtracks and more. Plus there is nothing better than going to a concert too. The lights, costumes, staging, and performance are art in their own way too.
  4. Go to a museum. Nothing like seeing great artwork. Whether it is something from the Renaissance or something modern, it is always a good time for me. I choose to get to museums a couple of times a year.
  5. Look at examples around you. One thing I used to do was cut out ads and editorial layouts that I liked from magazines. This is something that I plan on doing again. How did another designer solve a particular problem? Would you do it differently? How about snapping a photo of an interesting package at the supermarket too. Another idea to keep your creative juices flowing.
  6. Travel to another location. Go check out an area of the city you have never been to. If you have the money, travel to another city or country. Be inspired by all the different cultures, people, places, architecture and more of that new area.
  7. Look at/interact with animals. I have a cockatiel named AJ, and I love to watch him move around and play. It puts me in a good mood. I wonder how he sees the world. I also love going to zoos and aquariums — to see so many beautiful, interesting and exotic animals. They are a part of our world, and we can learn so much from them.

Those are just a few of my suggestions for keeping your creative energy up. It can be a challenge to do so. I hope you take the time to cultivate and stay inspired as much as I do.

Dream Jobs

What job would you do if money, connections and skill set were no obstacle? I have often wondered about this. I have done personality tests over the years, and they all seem to point me in a creative direction. So the jobs I would pick that would be very cool to have are:

Concert Creative Director
As fans of this blog know, I am a big music fan. I have seen some amazing shows in my years of sitting in the Cheap Seats. All of the different stage sets, with moving platforms, all the costumes, dancers and choreography. Add in the lighting, smoke and strobe effects, plus large video screens too. It would be awesome to put something like that together.

Fashion Designer
I have learned that my creativity is not limited to one area. I have never tried to design clothes, but it looks like it would be fun. I love watching “Project Runway” and how ideas proceed to execution. I would probably specialize in men’s clothes. Fashionable and funky — not something you would see on the average guy — but something different.

I am also a big fan of the movies and TV. To have the ability to play people so far removed from yourself and be believable in those parts, is a skill. Back in the day, it would have been cool to be on “90210” — now I think I would be the gay best friend in some romantic comedy movie.

Wedding Planner
I have always been an organized person, in addition to be creative. I am the type of person who likes to plan things too — from vacations to parties. So imagine helping a happy couple bring their vision to life… I think it would be a fun job. Stressful for sure, but ultimately fulfilling.

To be able to dance like a pro would be an awesome job. To entertain, and move people with your body. I am sure it is very thrilling. It would cool to be a lead dancer on a big tour like Madonna’s. Or to choreograph a big routine in the next “Step Up” movie.

To shoot the Undergear catalog or some erotic coffee table book featuring barely dressed and fit male models, sounds like fun to me. Having the models make love to the camera for a few minutes, as I snap away.

So that’s my list… what would your dream job be? I would love to hear from you.

My Wish List for the World

As we start a new year, I want to voice my hopes for the world. If we stay in expectancy with them, hopefully we will see them come to fruition in our lifetimes.Global Hands

  1. An End to All Wars
As the old song say, “War! What is it Good for — Absolutely Nothing.” We are all part of the human race, sure we come from different races, cultures and regions, but we are all one, and every life is sacred.
  2. An End to Gun Violence
Have we had enough of crazy people shooting up innocent people? Something needs to be done. And mental health is part of the issue too.
  3. People over Profits
I want to see a world where companies value their employees, and treat them fairly at a fair wage. I want the companies to be mindful of the environment and even their product lines. Do we really need more violent video games? Or ways to get drunk?
  4. Men and Women Equal
I never got the idea that a woman would get paid less for doing the same job as a man. It is time for that thinking to end. Why can’t a woman be attractive and smart?
  5. Marriage Equality for All
Who cares if you love a man or a woman? We all want to get married, whether we are gay or straight. Love is love.
  6. Affordable Healthcare
People should be able to see a doctor when they need to, and not worry if they are going to be able to afford it or not. Again, it call comes down to taking care of one another, and caring for your fellow man.
  7. Affordable Education
If you desire to learn, you should be able to go to school. Everyone should be able to get a quality education at a decent price. The world is quickly changing, and we need to constantly challenge ourselves to learn more.
  8. Respect for our Differences
We are never going to all be the same, in our thinking, in our beliefs, our appearance, our cultures, our faith and more. Who said we have to be.  Let’s let everyone be themselves and not persecute them because they are different from us.
  9. A Decent Standard of Living
I am not asking that we all be millionaires… but it would be nice if everyone could have a decent standard of living. To not worry and struggle just to make ends meet.
  10. Affordable Housing for All
Again, I want a world where there are no people sleeping on the street. That we could find and keep affordable housing for everyone.
  11. Creativity Nurtured
A personal one for me. We are all creative individuals, yet somehow creativity is often squashed and discouraged when we are young. Who knows where that creative thinking could lead to?

Let’s all pray that these come to pass in our lifetimes. We are all one in this human race, we need to be here for each other.

Creative Expression

I am a creative person. I heard a study that said if you asked a young child if they were creative, they would say “Yes.” But when you asked the same people by the time they are graduating from high school, they would say “No.” How interesting! I have always thought of myself as a creative person (as a child, and as an adult) and I am thankful and grateful that I have been able to make a living off of it.A View from the Cheap Seats

I always enjoyed art classes in school. Plus I enjoyed doing crafts like paint by numbers, and Shrinky Dinks. Two of my favorite toys allowed me to build things: Legos and Toggle Toys. One of my childhood obsessions was amusement parks. I was certain that I was going to own one some day. It was going to be called “Wonder World,” and would have different lands named after countries/regions. I even made a little miniature version of Knott’s Berry Farm, complete with working parachute ride.

High school was a difficult time for me, as it is for a lot of people. I was taking drafting in school, but that wasn’t too exciting for me. I enjoyed decorating my bedroom though. I had all kinds of concert/celebrity posters. Plus, I used to make collages of music and TV stars. I probably wasn’t true to myself yet, so I put a sexy photo of a guy and balanced it with a sexy photo of a girl on the other side. Yeah, I know who was I fooling?

In college, I decided to major in Art. Graphic design was my emphasis, but I was required to take everything from Life Drawing to Art History to Sculpture and Jewelry. It was nice to be creative in all different areas. I have some paintings/sculptures from that time that I still have hanging in my home.
