Girl Group Black Album

Here’s the sequel to the Boy Band Black Album blog. All these ladies first gained success as singers in groups. Then they all put out solo albums of varying success. Some were bigger than their groups (Beyonce), others not so much (Dawn Robinson). So in no particular order here are the 10 tracks I would put on a Girl Group Black Album:

  1. Melanie C. — I Turn to You. Otherwise known as Sporty Spice of the Spice Girls. She came out with a great dance song that shared one of Madonna’s producers.
  2. Belinda Carlisle — Mad About You. She is the lead singer for the Go-Go’s. But this was her first solo single, and one of her best. A fun, flirty pop song that is fun to sing along with.
  3. Emma Bunton — Maybe. She was Baby Spice in the Spice Girls. This sixties inspired dance song was a perfect fit for her sweet voice.
  4. Diana Ross — Upside Down. Yes, she is superstar. But she was once part of the Supremes. This funk song from Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers is one of her best solo numbers.
  5. Dawn Robinson — Party, Party. One of the girls from En Vogue, this song was full of funk and attitude. This will get you moving.
  6. Geri Halliwell — Look at Me. The first of the Spice Girls to go solo. She was Ginger Spice. It was nice to see her out in front, and having fun on her own.
  7. Jane Wieldlin — Rush Hour. The 2nd vocalist from the Go-Go’s. She is one of the guitarists and one of the songwriters too for the group. This cute pop song, was her biggest solo hit, other than her duet with the band Sparks (Cool Places).
  8. Beyonce — Crazy in Love. The song that started it all for her fantastic solo career. Still one of her best, and always great to see her perform it live.
  9. Michelle Williams — We Break the Dawn. The 2nd of the ladies from Destiny’s Child. She has recorded mostly gospel records as a solo artist, but when she went R&B, we got this jam.
  10. Kelly Rowland —When Love Takes Over. Recorded with DJ and producer David Guetta, her soaring vocals are what really make this song. The 3rd girl from Destiny’s Child. I am surprised she hasn’t had more solo success since she has a great voice too.

So that’s my list. Did I leave anyone out? Let me know your thoughts. I would love to hear from you. In the meantime, check out the songs on Itunes or on YouTube.

Best Dancers in Pop Music

Dancing allows an individual to express themselves with their body. Combine that with a competent singing voice, and you have an exciting entertainer — one who puts on a captivating live show and has some riveting music videos. Here’s my list of the best dancers in pop music (past and present), in no particular order:

Prince
The Purple one is not one for elaborate choreography, but he sure knows how to move. And he usually does it in high heel boots too.

Madonna
Pop music’s queen didn’t get to where she is on her singing voice. She is a very athletic and limber dancer who puts on a high-energy live show.

Janet Jackson
Ever since she proclaimed her independence on “Control”, she has had a place in pop music history. Funky, fierce and in control, Janet is not one to mess with.

Justin Timberlake
He started out in boy band NSync, and went on to be a superstar in his solo career. He has shown how great a dancer he is in his concerts tours and videos.

Britney Spears
Sexy moves, along with suggestive lyrics, a hot body and catchy songs have all kept her career going strong. Definitely influenced by Madonna… she has learned well.

Lady GaGa
Mother monster has created some fantastic mini movies with her music videos. In concert, she put on a high-energy show (such that she injured herself this year, having to cancel the rest of the tour).

Paula Abdul
She started as a Laker Girl, and then did choreography for various film, TV and music videos projects. Not to mention her own chart topping singing career too.

Usher
He first opened for Janet Jackson as a teen, but has evolved into a one of the modern kings of R&B. He can have you banging in the club or wanting to make love.

Chris Brown
Say what you will about him as a person, but there is no denying this guy can move and entertain the crowds.

Beyonce
Destiny’s Child proved she could sing. But in her solo career, she has really proved she can move. And start a music video craze on YouTube too.

Jennifer Lopez
She started as a Fly Girl on “In Living Color,” and is now the triple threat (actor, dancer, singer) plus much more.

Ne-Yo
One of the smoothest movers out there, he makes it all seem so easy.

And let us not forget those who have died, and are now in the Dance Hall of Fame:

Michael Jackson
All of the male dancers on here have been influenced by him. He basically set the gold standard for being an entertainer. And he always gave the audience his all.

James Brown
Yes, he got easier to parody in his later years. But do yourself a  favor and check out his old performances. Another influential entertainer.

So did I leave anyone out? Who do you think is the best dancer in pop music? I would love to hear from you.

Concerts I Am Looking Forward To In 2013

Here’s my list of the shows I am looking forward to this year:

Lady GaGa
Lady GaGa has been on tour with the “Born This Way” Ball for awhile now (She was on my list last year). It is finally hitting the US in the first half of the year.Lady GaGa

Rihanna
Well, the tour in 2012 never developed. And she was in the flop movie “Battleship”. She is touring behind her new CD “Unapologetic”, and is sure to include hits from the “Talk That Talk” album too. The new tour called “Diamonds” tour is set to hit the states in March.

Taylor Swift
Her latest CD “Red” is flying off the shelves… and so are the tickets to her latest tour which includes stadium shows in select cities. With her move fully into pop music with this latest CD, I am sure it will be a very theatrical and entertaining evening.

Maroon 5
I tried to get tickets for the 2013 tour, but they sold out very fast. They have been hotter since Adam Levine has been on “The Voice”. Plus supporting acts Owl City and Neon Trees should add to a great evening of live music.
