The summer is mostly over! So what did you think about the entertainment choices this summer? Here is my take on the movies and TV shows of summer:
- The Avengers
Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, Thor and more in one movie. This is one of the rare cases where the movie lived up to the hype. It was the most fun I have had at the movies this summer. Be sure to see it on video.
- Rock of Ages
The jukebox musical starring Tom Cruise and Julianne Hough tanked at the box office. That’s too bad because the movie is a lot of fun. It has a great soundtrack of 80’s pop/metal classics from Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Journey and more. Tom Cruise is fantastic in it and you will be singing along to the musical numbers.
- Katy Perry — Part of Me 3D
Part concert movie, part documentary, this movie shows why she is as big a star as she is. She put in her dues, and works hard for her fans. It is the best movie of it’s kind since Madonna’s “Truth or Dare.”
- Men in Black III
Likable, if forgettable sequel. The main thing that keeps this movie afloat is the cast: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin. Hopefully, this is the last movie in this franchise.
- Step Up Revolution
Who would have thought this movie franchise would be up to Part 4? They keep upping the complexity and staging of the dance routines. I think this is one of the best of the bunch. You want to go out dancing after you see it.
- The Amazing Spiderman
Another origin story? Somehow it works. Much better than “Spiderman 3.” This movie reminds us of the fun we can have at the movies. Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield have great chemistry, and have taken their relationship into real life.
The creator of TV’s “Family Guy” brings his twisted sense of humor to the big screen. I always wanted my stuffed animals to come to life too, but I never would have imagined them being this raunchy. Funny, but not all that. “Bridesmaids” was better.
Season one of this latest reality singing competition has just ended. Does anyone really care who won? I tried watching it. And what I liked about it was the celebrities themselves (especially Kelly Clarkson and Jennfer Nettles) and not who they were singing with. I don’t think the format is conducive to picking a singing superstar. The rating were only OK, so don’t know if it will be back.
- Opening Act
I am liking this one though. Nigel Lythgoe and a team of professionals search the internet for opening acts for some of today’s top stars like: Jason Mraz, Rod Stewart, Lady GaGa and more. So they are picked from obscurity (via YouTube) and given 1 week to prepare for their opening act. No big prizes, and only 1 show performing as the opening act, but it is definitely more exposure for these new artists. I am sure you will be hearing more from them.
I got turned onto this by Entertainment Weekly. It stars comedian Louis C.K. in a semi-autobiographical comedy… So he tells jokes on stage, and then it goes back to his real life of dealing with kids and dating too. The episode with Oscar winner Melissa Leo was great. This show is growing on me. Definitely a twisted sense of humor at times.
- All the Right Moves
Call it “So You Think You Can Dance” the reality show. This show follows Season 2’s Travis Wall (now an acclaimed choreographer) and 3 friends, including Nick Lazzarini the winner from Season 1 as they start a dance company called “Shaping Sound.” If you like “SYTYCD” or “America’s Best Dance Crew” you will like this show too.
So what TV shows, and movies have been turning you on or off this past summer? I would love to hear from you.
