Views on pop culture through my eyes

Long before Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, we had the teen pop boom of the late 90’s and early 2000’s. This was the time of Backstreet Boys, NSync, Britney, Christina, etc. So let’s look back to our favorites from that era and see where they are today…

Backstreet Boys. They are the last of the remaining boy bands from that era. All of the others are gone: NSync, 98 Degrees, LFO. This past summer they teamed up with the New Kids on the Block for a sold-out arena headlining tour. Kevin Richardson, who left the band in 2006, even joined his fellow bandmates in the Los Angeles show. I hear the group will be working on a new CD soon.

NSync. The group was the launching pad for singing superstar turned actor Justin Timberlake. I always knew that Justin was a star. But JC Chasez was too. I am disappointed that his solo career never took off the way that Justin’s did. His first solo album was very nice, and he is not using his talents to the fullest on “America’s Best Dance Crew.” I always thought that the band should have carried on without Justin… I think they would have been fine. Joey and Lance have done acting, Chris has not done too much. (Sorry can’t count “The Man Band” show).

98 Degrees. They were the 3rd most popular boy band. Nick and Jessica got married, and we all know how that turned out. Nick is now the host of “The Sing Off” and remarried to Vanessa Minillo. Drew did “Dancing with the Stars” and won. Jeff has had a solo album, and performed as part of the Las Vegas Chippendales show. Justin was just arrested as part of the Occupy movement in Ohio. Again, I wonder why they never got back together as their solo endevours haven’t done so well.

Britney Spears. Who would have thought she would still be around? Yeah, she has a few off years, married a loser, had some kids, went a bit crazy… but she has rebounded very well. She has found her niche with dance music and keeps us interested in her live performances too.

Christina Aguilera. So 2010 was not her year…with her divorce, flop album and flop movie. But 2011, brought  “The Voice” and “Moves Like Jagger” with Maroon 5. She has still taken some heat for supposed weight gain (Let her be!), but I think she will be fine too. If she had a hit song again, all would be forgiven.

Jessica Simpson. The number 3 female behind Britney and Christina, has had a bit of trouble since she moved on from Nick Lachey. She has had a few relationships that didn’t work out. Had a couple of flop albums (including a push into country music). She starred in another reality show, “The Price of Beauty” but it did nothing to raise her profile. She is definitely at a career crossroads. Can she come back?

LFO. Lead by Rich Cronin, this 3-some combined hip-hop with singing for fun songs like “Summer Girls” and “Girl on TV.” Unfortunately, their second album flopped, despite the fact that it was better than their first. Rich ended up dying of leukemia in Sept of 2010.

So when will the bubble burst for the latest teen pop explosion? Who knows. Will we remember any of the current stars 10+ years down the road? We’ll just have to wait and see.
