Views on pop culture through my eyes

If you haven’t noticed, I follow entertainment pretty religiously: movies, TV and music. If you want to know what’s hot, or what’s not, people usually ask me. If I haven’t seen/heard something, I usually have read a review of it. Below are reviews of recent movie, DVD, and CD releases. Let me know your thoughts on them too.

Michael Jackson “Immortal”
The soundtrack to the MJ’s Cirque Du Soleil show of the same name features slightly remixed and edited versions of all his big hits, as well as songs from the Jackson 5 too. Some of the songs are in medleys, and include dialogue from Michael from the videos. A good souvenir for the show, comes in 2 versions, with the deluxe one having more songs. Grade: B

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
There’s life left in this franchise after all. Was anyone really asking for another one? But Tom Cruise is smart, and has recruited a new director and new costars for this latest installment. The action sequences are excellent, you will be asking yourself, how did they do that? A very enjoyable popcorn movie. Grade: A-

The Artist
A silent movie in 2011? Why not? Shot in B/W too… this movie is a celebration of Old Hollywood and simpler times. It deals with a silent movie star who is on the way down as talky pictures start to take off, and the girl who is riding the wave up. Sure to be an award contender. Grade: A-

The Girl with the Dragon TattooThe Girl with the Dragon Tattoo You are probably familiar with the book or the Swedish version of the film. This is good also. David Fincher, never one to shy away from tough material, brings his cinematic touch to the proceedings. Rooney Mara is a discovery… and it is nice to have a hunky male lead in Daniel Craig too. Grade: A

Young Adult
The latest movie written by Diablo Cody (Juno), has Charlize Theron as a young adult writer out to get back her old high school boyfriend. Thing is he has a wife and kid. But she could care less, telling him he could get past it like an addiction. I love that she is inspired by reality shows and what teenagers are saying at the mall. Grade: B+

The Descendants
This George Clooney movie tells the story of Matt, whose wife is in a coma after a boating accident. He has to manage his two daughters who he has a strained relationship with. He also finds out that she was having an affair too. A definite tear jerker. It is sure to be a major award contender this season. Grade: A

Adele “Live at the Royal Albert Hall”
I am late to come to Adele’s party. I got this as a Christmas present and have been enjoying it. It has her hits from her albums as well as a few inspired cover songs too. It comes with a CD and DVD. The DVD I got came in edited form, so be warned if you want to hear her bawdy language. I am sure it comes unedited too. Grade: B

Britney Spears “Live — The Femme Fatale Tour”
I missed this one when it came to town last year.  Another great show from Britney. She surrounds herself with a great band and dancers. The sets, costumes and staging are all excellent. The show was designed by Jamie King who has worked with Madonna, and has all of her hits, plus album cuts and even her take on Rihanna’s “S&M”. Grade: A
