Views on pop culture through my eyes

Let Chaz Dance

The new fall TV season has not even started yet, but we already have our first big controversy. And it concerns Dancing with the Stars. There are a lot of people upset about the casting of Chaz Bono as a contestant on the program. Chaz is the offspring of Cher and Sonny Bono. He was born a woman (Chastity), but she became a man a few years ago and goes by Chaz. So we have our first transgendered contestant on “DWTS.”Chaz Bon and Lacey Schwimmer

Other contestants this coming season include:

  • Nancy Grace — Legal commentator/host
  • Ricki Lake — Actress/author/former talk-show host
  • Rob Kardashian — Younger brother of the Kardashian girls
  • David Arquette — Actor and ex-husband of Courteney Cox
  • Ron Artest — Los Angeles Lakers forward
  • Kristin Cavallari — Reality star from The Hills and Laguna Beach
  • J.R. Martinez — All My Children actor
  • Hope Solo — Woman’s soccer player
  • Elisabetta Canalis — George Clooney’s ex — actress/model
  • Chynna Phillips — Wilson Phillips singer married to Billy Baldwin
  • Carson Kressley — Queer talk show host

The right-wing bigots and so-called Christians are bashing ABC’s decision to cast Chaz. They say we are forcing the gay agenda down people’s throats. They say this doesn’t belong on a family friendly show. To the last comment, I have to say “Have you watched the show?” They have cast Lil Kim and Kim Kardashian on the show. Both have done porn movies. They have had two of Hugh Hefner’s “girls next door/girlfriends.” And this season brings Elisabetta Canalis, who’s biggest credit is that she slept with George Clooney. Have you seen the outfits that they give the women on here? Not exactly something you would wear to church. And what about judge Bruno? Whose comments are loaded with sexual innuendos?

Dan Gainor of the Culture and Media Institute calls Bono’s casting “a ridiculous, agenda-driven move by Dancing With the Stars. “This is the latest example of the networks trying to push a sexual agenda on American families,” he said. Online group OneMillionMoms.com is calling for a boycott of the show. It says on its website that the casting of Bono and openly-gay reality star Carson Kressley “is completely unacceptable and Christians should not watch the show, no excuses!”

Even in the gay community, transgendered individuals are misunderstood. What would make someone want to change their sex? I have met 2 transgendered individuals. Both were born women, and now they are living their lives as men. One has had a sex change operation, the other one hasn’t but has taken male hormones. From specials I have seen on TV, I have seen stories of young children grappling with the issue of being born in the wrong body. These are kids… saying that they identify with being a man (despite being a girl) or that they identify with being a woman (even though they are a boy). They weren’t molested or brain washed by their parents. I don’t know Chaz’s personal journey, but I am sure it took a lot to come to the conclusion that he did (I will have to read the book). The transgendered individuals I know seem to be happy with who they are and are leading productive lives.

There are those that say “He’s not a celebrity!” And Briston Palin was? She was a teenager who got knocked up, and she parlayed that into big money because of who her mother was. Chaz Bono deserves his shot at the mirror ball trophy just as much as the rest of these so-called celebrities do.

Chaz’s Mom, Cher has taken to Twitter to defend her son’s decision to join Dancing With the Stars as the series’ first transgendered contestant. After becoming aware that Chaz was taking a lot of heat from transphobic internet commenters, she encouraged her fans to voice support for him on blogs and message boards and reminded everyone, “Mothers don’t stop getting angry with stupid bigots who f*** with their children!” She goes on to say “Bet the VAST MAJORITY of people will LOVE CHAZ on DWTS ! It’s took f***ing guts too! Chaz isn’t exactly the ‘Gotta Dance, Gotta Dance’ kinda guy.”

Chaz wrote back: “Thanks for all your support mom. The haters are just motivating me to work harder and stay on ‘DWTS’ as long as I possibly can.”

I for one, am looking forward to seeing him on there (paired with the sexy Lacey Schwimmer) and will be calling/voting online as much as possible to keep him in the competition.

  1. My parents are boycotting this season due to Chaz, and DWTS was their favorite show. Anyone have a Christian response to transgendered persons?
